The Sri Lankan navy whilst out on routine patrol spotted an elephant struggling to keep it’s trunk above the water swimming in a strong current.
It is believed that the current had swept the elephant out to sea, the elephant was found 16 KM out from the usual path between the islands.
The patrol radioed in support from the navy who used ropes to gently keep the trunk above the water and guide the elephant back to shore in an exhausting ordeal that lasted several hours.
The elephant made a full and swift recovery with no injuries and was roaming around eating before long.
